Three rounds in three days
Between September 14 and 16, 2026, IRCC held three Express Entry invitation rounds. Read together, they tell a story worth understanding before you spend a single dollar trying to raise your score.
| Date | Round | Invitations | Lowest score invited |
|---|---|---|---|
| September 14 | Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) | 576 | 734 |
| September 15 | Canadian Experience Class | 2,000 | 519 |
| September 16 | Senior managers with Canadian work experience (new category) | 250 | 389 |
The gap between 389 and 734 is not a detail: it is the difference between having a real chance and having none. And it does not depend on how many points you accumulated, but on which box the system puts you in.
The new category: exactly what it requires
The September 16 round was the first for a category called "Senior managers with Canadian work experience" (Version 1). We checked the ministerial instructions published that same day. To be a member you must meet all of the following:
- Have gained in Canada, within the previous three years, at least one year of full-time work experience (or the equivalent in part-time work).
- That experience must be in one of four National Occupational Classification unit groups: 00012 (senior managers in financial, communications and other business services), 00013 (senior managers in health, education, social and community services), 00014 (senior managers in trade, broadcasting and other services) or 00015 (senior managers in construction, transportation, production and utilities).
- You must have performed the lead statement and a substantial number of the main duties of the occupation as described in the NOC, including all essential duties. A job title alone is not enough.
- Unauthorized work does not count toward that year.
- You must not already hold a provincial nomination: those candidates are drawn in the PNP round.
The government states the goal plainly: retaining top talent with Canadian work experience.
What this says about the system in 2026
Look at the full September pattern:
- September 3: physicians with Canadian work experience, 229 invitations, cut-off at 198.
- September 4: healthcare and social services, 3,500 invitations, cut-off at 475.
- September 15: general Canadian Experience Class, 2,000 invitations, cut-off at 519.
- September 16: senior managers with Canadian work experience, 250 invitations, cut-off at 389.
Two of the new 2026 categories, physicians and senior managers, share one requirement: work experience in Canada. Not in your home country. In Canada. And in both, the cut-off landed far below the general round.
That is category-based selection working as designed: your overall score is the entry filter, but the deciding factor is whether your profile matches one of the government's priorities. This week, a candidate with 400 points inside the right category was invited; a candidate with 500 points outside any category was not.
What it means if you are in Mexico
Let us be clear: the senior managers category is narrow. 250 invitations, four executive-level occupation codes, and experience you must have earned inside Canada. Most people reading this article do not qualify today, and we will not tell you otherwise.
The useful part is the strategic lesson: Canadian work experience has become the master key. There are three legitimate ways to get it:
- Study in Canada and work afterwards on a post-graduation work permit. It is the longest path, but the most solid, and it is the one we walk with many families through Goldstone Education.
- Arrive with a job offer. This is the path we work on with Canadian employers who cannot find local talent. From November 3, 2026 an LMIA is no longer required for the offer to count, and in high-wage occupations it again earns points.
- A provincial nomination, which also adds 600 points and has its own round (although this week the cut-off was 734, which shows how competitive it has become).
In all three cases, before investing time and money it pays to know which category you could end up in and what experience you are missing to get there. That question is worth more than "how many points do I have?".
An honest warning
Cut-off scores change with every round and depend on how many candidates are in the pool that day. This week's numbers help you understand the trend; they do not promise anything. Nobody can guarantee that a future round will repeat these figures or that IRCC will approve an application. Always verify the data on the official Express Entry rounds page.
